Laws Discussion

LAW 92 - RIGHT TO APPEAL

A. Contestant's Right

The QBA Regulations allow appeal committees to apply penalties for appeals which are deemed to be substantially without merit. The maximum penalty to be applied is 2 VP's or half a top in a matchpoint pairs event.

B. Time of Appeal

92B is not a safety net for contestants who fail to call the director when attention is drawn to an irregularity or when an irregularity is suspected but the director is not called there and then.

A common reason for belated requests for rulings is when hand records are checked at the end of a session and an irregularity comes to light.

D. Concurrence of Appellants

The Laws still require both players in a partnership to concur in appealing. Note that an absent player is no longer deemed to concur.
